Konye:Kokobuma Ostracizes Alleged Wizards, Poisoners

The village of Kokobuma in konye Subdivision, Meme Division, along the Kumba-Mamfe highway has ostracized some individuals for allegedly practicing witchcraft and poisoning.Villagers banished and escorted them out of the community with a warning never to return.According to information gathered, some were purported to have practiced sorcery or black magic by disappearing large sums of money from the pockets and wallets of inhabitants after handing them few francs of their own money.Others were accused to have caused sicknesses and deaths of some people in the community through poisoning.Sources have narrated that immediately the accused entered the neighbouring village, they were sent away for fear of the unknown.Though many have hailed the action as the right step in the right direction to cleanse the village of wrongdoings, others have said it is not unconnected to jealousy and witch-hunt.They have condemned the move in ostracizing them, stating that to live within any part of Cameroon is an inalienable right, protected by international legal instruments, enshrined in the preamble of the Constitution of Cameroonian.”Sending someone away from his usual place of abode is an international crime,” they argued.Adding:”However, if the people are sure of the allegations levied on these people, they should make a criminal report of witchcraft and capital murder by poisoning punishable under the Cameroonian Penal Code.”To them, most at times, when such incident happens, it is often an incitement by the victims’ rivals based on malicious accusations.Efforts to get in touch with the Traditional Ruler of Kokobuma village, His Majesty Eseme Ellis, for an appraisal on the situation, have been in futility but opinions hold that he must be unaware as he lives out of the village.
