Konye Celebrates Rural Women’s Day In StyleWomen in Konye Subdivision have joined their counterparts across the world to celebrate the 30th Edition of the International Rural Women’s Day in pomp. The event that held at the Konye Municipal Grandstand was celebrated on the theme:”Rural Women facing the challenges of climate change and access to productive resources.” It was presided over by the Divisional Officer, DO, of Konye Subdivision, Attah Moses Ndep. In attendance were the First Deputy Mayor of the Konye Council, Mande Comfort; Brigade Commander of the National Gendarmerie in Konye; Divisional Delegate, DD, of Women’s Empowerment and the Family, MINPPROF, for Meme, Enow Tabetah Ayukanda; traditional rulers and spouses; clergy; and, a cross-section of the population of Konye Subdivision. Thanking her collaborator, the Sub Delegate of MINPPROF, Konye, Emma Njonji spouse Musima, for inviting her to the event, the Divisional Delegate of MINPPROF for Meme noted she was elated to celebrate with the rural women of Konye Subdivision.She added it was her first time to participate in such a well organised event in Konye. In her speech on the occasion, the DD of MINPPROF for Meme reflected on the theme of this year’s celebration and promised to comeback in Konye in subsequent events. On his part, the Divisional Officer, DO, of Konye Subdivision noted it was a great joy and honour for him to celebrate the day with the rural Women of his area of command. The day, he said, was not only to celebrate, but served as a reminder that the international community recognises the rural women for their potentials and roles they play in the rural milieu in serving humanity. Reiterating on the theme, the DO of Konye Subdivision said rural women are more affected by climate change due to their dynamism. He used the event to call on the rural women to adapt to the changes while engaging in more fruitful activities. Meanwhile, Dr Rose Anjoh, presented a paper on the theme of the celebration.While proposing solutions, she called on the need for communities to be resilient and adapt to such global climate change. Another paper presented, focused on breast cancer and the necessity for the rural women to take on precautions as preventive measures. The celebration of this year’s edition of the International Rural Women’s Day in Konye was an opportunity for the women to receive farm inputs from the DD of MINPPROF for Meme donated by a partner, the South West Development Authority, SOWEDA. The day was implemented by the United Nations’, UN, General Assembly as an annual event on October 15. It highlights the role and situation of women in rural areas.
