There are indications the government is envisaging to set up new administrative units in Cameroon with the creation of new Divisions and Subdivisions.
An instruction from the Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, is a pointer to this direction.
The decision aimed at updating the national administrative unit map.
Atanga in a memo dated December 2, 2025, has requested the 10 regional Governors to send statistics of their respective regions in terms of population size, according to the extent of the administrative units: mothers and the units to be created; distance between the administrative units: mothers and the units to be created; economic, social, and cultural activities; availability of immediate infrastructures capable of hosting basic services, administrative offices, and residences for responsible officials; and, possibly, strategic and security considerations for the units to be created, urgency and importance to be particularly highlighted.
The updating of the national administrative map is a strategic undertaking for regional planning and strengthening local governance.
To the minister, this will go a long way to strengthen good governance and enhance the socio-economic climate of the various Divisions and Subdivisions.
The government will also use this as a means to promote the cultural inheritance of the population as it seeks to continue in its policy of national integration,living together, and social cohesion.
The minister noted as soon as all the parameters have been fulfilled, there will be an imminent decreeing by the Head of State, President of the Republic, His Excellency Paul Biya.
The last creation of new Subdivisions was in 2007.
The current measure will come to ease good governance as some Divisions in the country are quite vast and there is an urgent need for splitting into other administrative units.
